THE MAN AND HIS MACHINES : ADITYA VIJ
All men like machines, the person we
interviewed today loves many types of machines . His love for Vintage cars and Vintage Two
wheelers is well known, also for the vintage tube radios and the vintage
cameras, but today we caught up with him for a very different set of machines
.He loves the machines (typewriters)
As per him the typewriters are an integral
part of mans modern history and a love affair which lasted 150 years .And now
almost coming to an end with only a few wanting to keep it alive .
To Cherish the bygone era.
HISTORY
The first typewriters appeared in an around
1860’s and the last perhaps in 2010 (probably Godrej) has been the last
company in the world to manufacture the typewriters .The typewriters evolved
from a typographer ..writing mechanism
.Initially it was called a cross between a piano and kitchen table but it soon
began evolving and the iconic Remington brand started manufacturing the type
writers in 1874 .But till around 1910 , the typewriters did not get
standardised .The “noiseless” typewriters came up in around 1917 and sold quite
well from the 1930’s to the 1950’s .
Many iconic companies like Hermes , Smith
Crona , Underwoood , Olympia , Olivetti
and Royal came up with different
typewriters and many a companies kept changing the brands to keep in tune with
the changing times .Many of these brands became unique pieces like the
Remington lifting model and the Valentino ( also called the Bucket model ).Each piece came up with
beautiful design components and the typing keys kept evolving from glass keys
to metallic keys to plastic keys and the space bars from wood to metal to plastic
.

THE COLLECTION
Aditya Vij’s collection has about 45
typewriters , the oldest one in his collection being a 1909 model but the one
he cherishes the most is the lifting model which is dated back to 1920’s .Apart
from loving the design components the cases in which the typewriters came also
are as beautiful as the machines themselves.
As Mr Vij intends to set up his Museum of
all vintage stuff that he collects
across different categories the typewriters are surely in for finding a big
place in the museum
